Bricks

Has been a massive wait for our bricks - have been watching all the houses shoot up around us and ours was just sitting there with bricks ready for about a month- apparently due to lack of brickies... They are now up (took roughly 10 days and we are loving the selections we chose. Bricks have not been washed yet, so guessing it'll be another week before they begin anything else... I'll get some better photos when the bricks have been cleaned.

Little update -

Our slab has been laid, and the framework has been delivered. Took a week before the framework was delivered after the slab went down. Fingers crossed we get through this without too much rain to hold up the builders...

Selections

My partner and I had many disagreements during selection stages.

In the end we found a display home which had similarities to some of our colour choices and we both finally made decisions. It was hard to envision all the choices together.

We decided after much debate to get the included laminate rather than upgrade to the stone. We also avoided the upgrade of ducted. We might regret this later on but for now it is the right one. We have noticed if we chose to put in air cons, the only option would be above the tv in the kitchen and above the bed in the main room.. these things are influencing the idea to get ducted...

For all our colour selections we made a point to have already picked what we wanted before the meeting process... Had plenty of time to do so, and I would have hated not knowing before I went in to choose..

Tiles and carpet

Dark charcoal tiles in the bathrooms/laundry.

We upgraded on splash back tiles for the kitchen
The large hexagon embellished tile in the centre.

Kitchen cupboards will be a Cavia Lini sheen with the benchtops Pure marble velour finish by Formica. (small sample in middle)

The main floor is a light grey  tile in satin finish -

We also upgraded the drains in the bathroom from the plastic to a square chrome/tile.

Chose to delete the option of bathroom soap holders - they look pretty cheap and we'd rather put some glass shelves in later.

We did not get the fancy blue /grey black feature tile strip- it was an extra cost and thought it hard to keep clean as well as the idea it might look outdated in a couple of years... plus we could not agree on feature tiles and opted for the fancy drains instead..

Went for the charcoal carpet - there were only the samples in the pic that we could select from.

Fingers crossed it all works well together..

Roof and bricks

We selected Gibson bricks with the Sambuca Tile Roof.

At first we went for the barramundi coloured roof tile but noticed on a few houses it faded out a blue grey in the sun.

Make sure you go around and try and find the colours your looking at on actual houses. They are soo different on a real building compared to that on display.

For all the drainpipes and window surrounds we went for the blacks.

For the front door and garage door we opted for the wood-grain option and we're having the door stained rather than being painted. - These were extra costs.

Paint

We chose a pale blue (I'll post the name when i find it) for throughout the house and we're having the media room darkened. The laundry and bathrooms will be polar white.

Choosing the Harmony Entertainer

So we first looked to this design because of the amount you get compared to price of other companies. A stressful time for visiting various other builders made us pretty happy with the quick decision we made based mainly on the noticeable difference in prices and the deal which was going at the time - (Upgrades for appliances, façade and inc. carpet and tiles) and because of the limited time we had to agree to get the deals..

This is what we chose - after reading tonnes of blogs as well as what felt like hundreds of visits to display homes.

We had the home flipped so the entertainment section was on the left size because of the North facing aspect of the land.

Moved and changed some windows to best accommodate sun/ furniture. Family room/kitchen windows are different from initial plan.

Extended the kitchen bench to the wall - Widened the area between the kitchen bench to allow for more movement.

Changed sink position.

Extended the fridge area

Added above fridge cabinets - only for appearance value (be sure to measure your fridge height)

Added half a metre to the garage to fit our larger car

Changed 2x single garage doors to a double

Changed the garage house access door to be sliding/ and added a door to access the back yard.

Changed media doors to a larger size

Extended all wardrobes

My notes for next build - Ceiling heights/ wall entries, kitchen cabinets - increase heights,  manhole location, heating/cooling locations, ask for knobs on wardrobes to be left off, sliding doors to media, ask for location of downpipes - not positioned at entry door..

How it fits on the land

We have the house aligned on the right side, close to the retaining wall.

Hopefully we will have side access to the back yard.

Where we began

Purchase of land

July 2015

We chose this land for these features
* Distance from fire - eliminates fire safety costs
* Recycled water connections - eliminates tank systems.
* Relatively flat - allowed for slab build
* On top of hill - view/water flow
* Price
* Ready to build - registration was within a month unlike nearby land offers.
* Dimensions - 15m frontage, fans to 20m rear, 39m length

The land registered by the end of August 2015
